On October 1, 2012 KAIR began overseeing
Independence Cay, an agency that serves the homeless
in Marathon. Every day of the week, they welcome the homeless for a hot lunch, showers, and laundry. It is also open to all
during inclement or cold weather. There are daily AA meetings as well as other classes that promote well-being and self-sufficiency.
Independence Cay currently also has transitional housing for
8-10 men that are committed to making the changes necessary to get their lives back on track. They live as a family, work
on obtaining jobs, attend AA meetings if appropriate, and resolve physical and mental health issues. The men also maintain
a vegetable and herb garden that contributes to the daily meal that is served to the homeless on site.
Several of the churches in Marathon have stepped forward to assist with providing
a home cooked hot lunch. Currently, Marathon Community United Methodist Church, St. Columba Episcopal Church and the Church
of God all have chosen days where they bring the food and serve it to the homeless. This is so appreciated by those who benefit.
We are hoping that more local churches and community organizations will participate.
Independence Cay is located at 1669 Overseas Highway, Marathon, behind Royal Furniture. We welcome your ideas and your
support and invite you to “come on down”.
